Variant images

Open Variant images in the app menu and choose a product. The product editor has your settings on the left and a live preview on the right. On a phone, the preview sits just below the color rows.

Variant images lists your whole catalog.

  • Live shows products that already have a gallery. Not set up shows the rest. All shows everything.
  • Search by title, SKU, vendor or tag, and sort by date, title, vendor, product type or stock.
  • Each row says how many colors have photos, like 2 of 3 colors have photos, so you can spot gaps.

Across the top are your product’s options, like Color 3, Size 4. The one that changes the photos is highlighted, usually Color. Options that don’t change the photos say so under the tabs.

Most products need only one option. If a product also has a different photo for each Material, choose Add another option and add photos there too.

With two or more options, the rule is: when the value a shopper picks has photos, they see only photos that belong to it and to their other picks. A value with no photos doesn’t change anything. For example, with photos under Navy, Canvas and size 40, Navy · Canvas · 40 shows only photos in all three, while Navy · Canvas · 41 (41 has no photos) shows every Navy and Canvas photo.

The Combinations list under the rows shows every combination with the photos it gets, and flags the ones with no matching photo.

Each color has a row with its name, how many photos it has, and small previews of them.

  • + opens the photo window for that color.
  • Drag a photo from one row onto another to move it.
  • A color with no photos shows every photo on your storefront, so shoppers never see an empty gallery.

Choose + on a row.

  • Shown for Navy lists the photos chosen for that color, numbered in the order shoppers see them. The first one is the Main photo.
  • Point at a photo for its tools: ↑ makes it the main photo, × removes it, and the handle lets you drag it into a new order.
  • Other photos lists everything else. Click one to add it to the end.
  • Add from Shopify Files opens Shopify’s own file picker. Choose existing images or upload new ones there. They are added to the product and chosen for this color.

The order you set is saved as the product’s photo order in Shopify, so your theme’s gallery shows the photos in that order.

The Shared photos row holds photos that show with every color, like a size chart or a close-up of the fabric. Any photo you don’t add to a color is shared.

  • To share a photo with only some colors, add it to each of those rows instead. A photo can belong to several colors.
  • Hide on product pages hides all shared photos from shoppers.

Match by photo name reads each photo’s file name and description and places it in the color it mentions. It never moves a photo you’ve already placed. To start again from scratch, use More actions, then Start over from photo names.

At the top of the editor, More actions has:

  • Copy to another product — use this product’s setup on a similar product. Photos are matched by file name or description.
  • Undo last save and History — load an earlier setup. Nothing changes on your store until you save it.
  • Remove photo setup — shoppers see every photo again.

At the bottom of the editor:

  • Shared photos — show them with every choice, hide them, or follow your store setting.
  • Use the matching photo in cart and checkout — sets each variant’s own image to its main photo, so the cart, checkout and order emails show the right color.
